A belief that what she found "out there" was something that she could never find "there" - or that what she wanted "at home, i.e. there" could be found if she worked hard at, enough at, what was already in her life. I believe there were clearly other relationships "up in the air" that distracted her from working with and whom was NOT "up in the air".

agreed
we don't know.... but i also wonder if it wasn't some 'thing' that was missing for her, but rather a certain perspective. in other words, was her seeking contingent upon something missing in her life, or was it a result of an inability to see life, with all its ups and downs, with a level of perspective which would have allowed her to keep seeking inwardly rather than thinking she could find something else that provided fulfillment.

What we don't know is what is behind the doors of that brownstone - what led Alex to look for something on "the road" in terms of relationships. All we were allowed to see into her life was a child(ren) running up the stairs and sound of man's voice asking who was at the door. My curiosity as a clinical social worker was her perception of her reality in that house and what was lacking/missing in her life. I also wondered at the end of the movie if George's character was going to pursue a relationship that gave him roots and significance. The movie left you wondering......
